TidyTabs Configuration > Group Editor

The Group Editor dialog allows you to create or edit groups of windows that should be automatically grouped together by TidyTabs. This is useful when you want to keep related windows together, such as all the windows of a specific application, or all windows of the same kind (e.g. all text editors, all web browsers, etc.).

A group is defined by a set of rules that match specific windows. When a new window is opened, TidyTabs will check the rules you defined and group the window with the other windows that match the same rules. If no rule matches, the window will be left ungrouped.

To access this dialog, you can either:

  • Right-click on the tab of a window belonging to a group and select Edit group from the context menu.
  • Double-click on the TidyTabs tray icon, at the bottom-right corner of the screen, and click on GROUPS. Then, select a group and click on the Edit button or double-click on the group name.

The Group Editor dialog

  • Group name: this field allows you to specify a name for the group. This name is used to identify the group in the Groups tab of the TidyTabs configuration screen.
  • Enabled: this checkbox allows you to enable or disable the group. When disabled, TidyTabs will not apply the rules of the group.
  • Set default position: this checkbox allows you to set the default position of the group when it is created.
    • X: this field allows you to specify the horizontal position of the group on the screen, in pixels.
    • Y: this field allows you to specify the vertical position of the group on the screen, in pixels.
    • Width: this field allows you to specify the width of the group, in pixels.
    • Height: this field allows you to specify the height of the group, in pixels.
    • Maximized: this checkbox allows you to specify whether the group should be maximized by default when it is created.
    • Minimized: this checkbox allows you to specify whether the group should be minimized by default when it is created.
    • Window picker button: this button allows you to select a window by dragging the crosshair icon over it. This will automatically fill in the X, Y, Width, Height, Maximized, and Minimized fields with the values of the selected window.
  • Inclusion rules: this section allows you to define the rules that match the windows that should be included in the group.
    • Add button: click on this button to add a new rule. A Rule Editor dialog will open, allowing you to specify the rule.
    • Delete button: click on this button to remove the selected rule from the inclusion rules.
    • Edit button: click on this button to edit the selected rule in the inclusion rules. A Rule Editor dialog will open, allowing you to modify the rule.

Tips:

  • The order of the inclusion rules is important. If Sort tabs by > Inclusion rules is selected in the right-click menu of a tab group, TidyTabs will automatically sort the tabs in the group according to the inclusion rules. You can reorder the rules by dragging them with the mouse.
  • You can temporarily disable a rule by unchecking the checkbox next to its name. This will prevent TidyTabs from applying the rule until you check the box again.
